`And this is our blue sky interior brain worker ‘

Designer is now such a pejorative term that maybe the industry needs a new title.

In the Far East at least, designers already have a new name to adopt – brain worker.

It’s a bit of an umbrella title, in that not all brain workers are designers. But it’s the hot thing to be, according to Singapore newspaper The Straits Times.

The paper ran a feature in which brain worker is defined as a knowledge worker who thinks independently, is creative and is flexible enough to respond to new ideas. Cor, it’s like reading a job ad for a junior Mac worker.

Stand by for pages of recruitment ads looking for temporary brain workers, senior brain workers, and interior brain workers (does that mean surgeons?). Account directors, of course, will remain as account directors.

Several brain workers were profiled in the piece, including the very successful Su Yeang, md of Su Yeang Design – a “brain intensive” company, according to The Times.

Thanks to Neal Potter, the main brain of Neal Potter Design Associates, who brought news of the brain worker phenomenon back to us from Singapore.
