Millennium Products selected

Computer games Tomb Raider I & II with Lara Croft, motorway signs designed by Foster & Partners and a toddler’s training cup are among the 231 eclectic products in the second batch of Millennium Products.

Announced this week by Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson, the products are chosen by The Design Council as examples of innovative products and services.

Tomb Raider, the state-of-the-art adventure game developed by Core Design in Derby with Eidos Interactive, has sold nine million units worldwide since its launch two years ago. A Tomb Raider III version is out later this month.

Foster & Partners’ motorway signs were praised by Millennium Products assessors for their legibility – one of 30 transport-related projects chosen, along with the Heathrow Express and the Rover Freelander.

On the domestic side, inventor Mandy Haberman’s non-drip toddler’s training cup has been selected. It is manufactured in brightly coloured polypropylene for V&A Marketing.

Wilkinson Sword’s Protector 3D, designed in-house by Dave Coffin, has also been chosen. It is touted as the first razor to feature a 3D movement. One million razors are expected to be sold by the end of the year in the UK.

Trevor Baylis’ much-publicised Baygen Freeplay clockwork radio, with design by TKO, also joins the list.
