Ideo lands top prize in Design Week Awards

Product design group Ideo has won best-of-show in the ninth Design Week Awards for its Nike Vision sports sunglasses. The global group also took the Consumer Products prize in the awards, which were presented at the Natural History Museum in London on Wednesday.

The other product winner was JCB Industrial’s in-house team, which won the Industrial Products category with the Teletruk forklift truck.

US consultancy Lunar Design won a Special Commendation for three outstanding entries in this category.

Literature was strong this year, with CDT Design taking the Annual Reports honours for British Land’s 1997 report, and Dutch group Una winning Promotional Brochures with its own, Specimen 2.

Newell and Sorrell (now Interbrand Newell and Sorrell) won the Corporate Identity award for Selfridges & Co and Johnson Banks scooped the Posters prize with the Design Council’s Decisions educational series.

HGV took the Direct Mail category with its own April Fool’s Day mailer, and Turner Duckworth received a Special Commendation for its Architects of the Air Royal Mail stamps. The new Editorial Design prize went to Jaques Russell for the Nil by Mouth book.

Packaging awards went to Brewer Riddiford in the Branded category, for Nikon camera packs, and to Wickens Tutt Southgate, which won the Own-Brand prize for Superdrug’s Men’s Aromatherapy range.

Electronic media made a big showing this year. BBC Resources scooped the Television Graphics prize for the Christmas on BBC1 campaign, while Ammirati Puris Lintas won the Multimedia award for the Mini website for Rover Cars.

Interiors awards went to Buschow Henley for Prospect Pictures in the Workplace category, to Fitch for the Ingredients bakery chain in Retail, and Yo! Sushi with 4i for the Yo! Sushi Japanese fast food restaurant.

Jasper Jacob Associates won the Exhibition Design award for the Challenge of Materials gallery at the Science Museum in London.

There were no awards in the Calendars and Furniture categories. But the 18 main categories yielded 14 highly commended contenders.
