Caught up in the Catch 22 of free-pitching

Adding to Shan Preddy’s letter (DW 30 September 1994), would someone please explain exactly how we should educate our current or potential clients regarding their frequent offensive requests for a free creative pitch, when it seems the very clients who require the most education are usually those who do not wish to be, or can demand not to be, so educated.

Like us, the majority of smaller design consultancies are not in a position of being able to turn down potential work, no matter how it presents itself, although (in the instance of free-pitches) we would very much like to.

Does anyone out there remember a certain book by Joseph Heller?
