Bramante pleads ignorance in court action

Gabriele Bramante, winner of the BBC Design Award for architecture, who has been prosecuted by the Architects Registration Council, will push for another hearing to plead her case.

Bramante, partner at Teddington practice Bramante Architects, was fined 2000 last week for working as an architect when she is not registered. She lacks the final diploma which would enable her to register with architects’ registration council Arcuk.

“I did not receive a summons and did not know there was a hearing last week. I am going to try to get this judgement set aside,” says Bramante, who has not paid the fine. She sees the trouble as “a breakdown in communication”.

Arcuk assistant registrar George McLellan says he would “be very surprised if she was unaware of the hearing”. He adds: “An offence has been committed – anyone who calls him or herself an architect and isn’t registered can expect to be prosecuted”.
