Garrett revisits Buzzcocks for Sam Taylor-Wood film

Graphic designer Malcolm Garrett is to revisit his 1970s musical roots, collaborating on Sam Taylor-Wood’s forthcoming short film Love You More.

Produced by Mirage Enterprises and Film Four, the film, yet to be given a release date, is based around the release of the single of the same title by 1970s punk band The Buzzcocks.

Garrett explains that Taylor-Wood invited him to produce the title and end credits for the 15-minute film. ‘What has been produced is typographic and minimal as it’s only a short film,’ he says, ‘but it is based on the style and typography ofmy original sleeve design.’

Like his contemporaries Peter Saville, who worked with Factory Records, and Neville Brody, who worked with the Sex Pistols, Garrett found fame in the late 1970s, art directing and designing sleeves for The Buzzcocks.

Garrett expects the project to develop, with the possibility of a website and DVD in due course, but says ‘It’s early days yet as the film has not had an official release’.

Mirage Enterprises says it is hoping the film will make the festival circuit, particularly at Cannes and Venice, and plans to extend it into a fulllength feature film are being mooted.

The film follows the story of two teenage punks, whose worlds collide on the same day the Buzzcocks song is released, in July 1978.

Playwright and screenwriter Patrick Marber has scripted the film, while Atonement cinematographer Seamus McGarvey shot the scenes. According to a Mirage Enterprises spokeswoman, filming finished just two weeks ago.

Garrett’s other music work includes sleeve and graphic design for Duran Duran, Boy George and Peter Gabriel.
