The MoMA Design Store in New York has been redesigned by UK consultancy Lumsden Design and architect Gensler, which have looked to reinforce the shop’s connection with the Museum of Modern Art.
The design store is located opposite the museum in New York and has been made more open, lighter and now features bespoke merchandising display systems.
New modular displays
Tabletop items, kitchen, lighting, tech and personal accessories can all be hosted in the merchandising units, which can be easily reconfigured.
A custom jewellery counter has been made from glass and bead blasted steel and is designed so that the collection can be be viewed more easily.
Callum Lumsden at Lumsden Design says: “Our single focus was to design a shopping experience that best showcases the unique design pieces offered in the store.”
Making good design accessible to everyone
Meanwhile MoMA retail general manager Thomas Randon says that highlighting good design has always been “a fundamental part of MoMA’s DNA” and adds: “Because every object sold in the store has been approved by museum curators, the renovated MoMA Design Store is integral to our mission of making good design accessible to everyone.”
The store first opened in 1990 and was renovated by 1100 Architect in 1999. It offers design objects inspired by the museum’s collection as well as 20th century classic designs. It also hosts product launches and shows emerging designers’ work.
