Graphics integrate World Museum

Jasper Jacob Associates and BAF Graphics have collaborated to create gallery identities, graphics and wayfinding at The World Museum Liverpool, following a £35m redevelopment project to double the museum’s size.

The work runs across five floors, housing six galleries and it includes identities for both retail and public spaces, such as the glass-topped atrium, a learning centre and a café.

JJA was appointed to the project as the lead creative consultant in 1998 following a pitch. Sister company Jasper Jacob Communications has handled the graphic design and BAF has produced and installed the graphics on site.

The new galleries at the museum include the World Cultures gallery, the Bug House, the Aquarium and the Weston Discovery Centre. The latter will display archaeology and ethnology collections, while the Clore Natural History Centre and the Treasure House Theatre will host educational events.

The design challenge was to integrate graphics with 3D elements and link all the separate identities to ‘bring them together in a coherent way’, according to Daniel Sutton, creative director at JJC.

‘The success of the graphic interpretation relies on clear and engaging wayfinding, punctuated by arresting gallery identities,’ Sutton adds.

The refurbishment programme first began in 1999. The extension opens to the public on 29 April.
